Antioxidants & You

Antioxidants & You

There are so many buzzwords in skincare. Many of them are mentioned and brushed past assuming we all know what they are. Two of those being antioxidants and free radicals. It breaks downs like this in layman's terms; antioxidants are good, free radicals are bad. But why?

What are Antioxidants & Free Radicals?

While antioxidants are not actual ingredients in skincare, they are the properties of different ingredients. The word “fight” is used a lot when discussing the relationship between these and free radicals, but what they actually do is balance out free radicals. These are naturally occurring compounds, but when their levels get too high they can cause harm. The body actually needs a balance of the two to work harmoniously. Free Radicals can help your immune system fight off infections, but when they outnumber antioxidants could lead to oxidative stress. Internally, this means heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more; on the skin, they can lead to hyperpigmentation, breakouts, and other skin conditions.

Where can you find free radicals?

As mentioned, free radicals occur naturally and your body produces them to help fight off infections. But when their levels can get too high (both internally and topically), it's probably due to external exposure from air pollution, cigarette smoke, alcohol, high blood sugar levels or, or other factors. Free Radicals affect everyone differently, so a rise in their levels may cause imbalance either in your body, on your skin, or both.
